Important Questions to Ask Photographers Before You Book a Photo Shoot
by Amy Levin-Epstein

Once you've narrowed down your shortlist to two or three potential photographers, meet with each in person (or by video chat if logistics are tough) to see if you feel comfortable around them.  We can't stress enough how important this is—almost as crucial as their skills behind the camera. You'll be spending your entire photo shoot with this person and if you're at ease, you'll not only enjoy yourself more, but they'll also get better shots. Win-win!  Aside from your gut instinct, ask these questions before choosing a photographer (since they're a little lengthy, email some when you're deciding with whom to meet):

  • What style(s) do you specialize in?

  • Will the photos be retouched and color-balanced? Is that done before I see the proofs?

  • What exactly is included in the Photo Shoot (images)?

  • How long is the photo shoot?  Is there a charge if it goes over that time?

  • What is the deposit and total fee?

  • Will you be doing the photo shoot alone or with assistants?  Who are they?

  • Will there be a second shooter or any assistants?  Is there an additional fee for each (if applicable)?

  • Are we doing the photo shoot on location, at a studio, at a home, or at a hotel?

  • Do you have backup photographers in case you cannot do the photo shoot?

  • Will there be a second shooter or any assistants?  Is there an additional fee for each (if applicable)?

  • How long after the photo shoot do we get to see the photos?

  • Is there going to be BTS photography?  Who will do it?  What will it be?

  • How do you envision working together?

  • Have you ever shot at my venue(s) before?

  • Will you follow a shot list? Or do you prefer free reign to capture the festivities as you see fit?

  • What are the restrictions for sharing photos online or for publication?

  • Do you bring your own lighting?
